What Women of the Year means to us
Sainsbury’s has a long and proud history of providing opportunities for women. It was one of the first employers to recognise the potential of women in the workplace and now over 50 per cent of Sainsbury’s colleagues are female. The Sainsbury’s ‘You Can’ Award is a chance to not only celebrate this heritage but also to highlight the incredible achievements of women from all walks of life, both in this country and around the world.

Sainsbury’s and Women of the Year 2010
The inaugural Sainsbury’s ‘You Can’ Award was won by Shara Brice MBE, the founder of the Ascension Eagles Cheerleaders, a youth programme based in East London. Since its launch in November 1996 the Ascension Eagles have made a difference to thousands of young people from one of the most deprived areas in London. Shara was a worthy recipient of the Award as she embodies Sainsbury’s aim for all of its stores and colleagues to make a positive impact on the communities that they serve.
