On Saturday 13 June 2015, Women of the Year was delighted to partner with Newnham College, University of Cambridge, to host a special anniversary event to mark our 60th year.
Sandi Toksvig OBE, President of Women of the Year, introduced the session with Professor Alison Wolf, Baroness Wolf of Dulwich, delivering the keynote speech ‘When class trumps gender: the good news and the bad news about rising female inequality.’ Alison is the Sir Roy Griffiths Professor of Public Sector Management at King’s College London and she sits as a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords.
Professor Wolf’s speech was based on her provocative book ‘The XX Factor’ (Profile Books, 2013). The book looks at what the next decade of female achievement may hold, and what obstacles remain in women’s lives to prevent them achieving their full potential.
Professor Wolf discussed the increasing inequality between women and the ways in which this is growing faster than between men. Her speech described the differences between two distinct ‘tribes’ of women and the impact of careers, motherhood and relationships.
Professor Wolf also discussed the ‘global care chain’ and the immigration of millions of women across the world to look after other people’s homes, children or the sick and elderly.
The keynote speech was followed by a lively panel discussion chaired by Julie Etchingham, Journalist and ITV News at Ten Broadcaster (and Newnham Graduate), with a panel including: Professor Dame Carol Black, Principal of Newnham; Sue Owen, President of the Newnham Associates, Permanent Secretary at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport; and Eve Pollard OBE, British Author, Journalist, Broadcaster, former newspaper Editor and a member of the Women of the Year Alumnae.
Jane Luca, Chair of Women of the Year, said: “The event was very special as it celebrated two leading female institutions and was an inspiring and thought provoking day. Thank you to all who attended in celebration of Women of the Year’s 60th anniversary.”
Sandi Toksvig and Julie Etchingham also spoke at an earlier event for Newnham College students about their time at Cambridge and their careers.
