Lulu
Lulu, 62, was born Marie MacDonald McLaughlin Lawrie in Glasgow.
Lulu started singing at an early age – when she was 14 she joined a local group called the Gleneagles. They played in clubs in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh. One evening in 1964, Lulu was discovered at The Lindella Club and subsequently exploded onto the British and International pop scene with her cover of the Isley Brothers’ song, ‘Shout’. In 1966, Lulu landed a role in the movie ‘To Sir With Love’ opposite Sidney Poitier and also sang the title song which made it to number one in the USA. In 1974, David Bowie wrote, produced and played on her hit ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ which reached number 3 in the UK and brought Lulu to a whole new audience! In the same year she also sang the title theme to the James Bond film ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’.
Lulu was back in the limelight and at number one in 1993 when she sang unforgettable guest vocals on Take That’s ‘Relight My Fire’. To date, she is the only female artist to have appeared on Top Of the Pops in each of the last five decades.
For the last two years, Lulu has wowed audiences with her sell-out Here Come the Girls tours alongside Chaka Khan, Anastacia and Heather Small.
She has also created a successful, award winning beauty collection, ‘Time Bomb’, and has recently launched a hugely successful hair line, Operation : Glam. Her book ‘Secrets to Looking Good’ is a best seller.
She is currently taking part in BBC1’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ partnered with the dancer Brendan Cole.
