Heba Bevan OBE
Founder of UtterBerry Ltd
Vodafone’s Woman of the Year Innovation Award was presented by Suranne Jones to Heba Bevan OBE, founder of UtterBerry Ltd. A mother of one from Yorkshire who studied electronics and engineering at university, Heba was the only woman on her degree course, before creating one of the most exciting, multi-award winning, young technology companies in Europe. UtterBerry’s revolutionary low-power smart sensor systems, which are all manufactured in the UK, are now being used on some of the world’s biggest civil engineering projects. Their tiny sensors, which monitor loads on structures and bridges, can be used in disaster scenarios such as were executed during Hurricane Katrina, and UtterBerry are also making inroads into the fields of smart construction, smart hospitals, crowd-sensing, and more.
Heba Bevan said, “I am elated to receive the Woman of the Year Vodafone Woman of Innovation Award, it is an incredible honour for my work to have been recognised in this way. Since I was a child I have had a love for engineering, problem solving and invention. This love drove me to work extremely hard in my studies and to go into a line of work where I have often been the only woman in the room. Women have so much to give to the world in so many ways, and I would like to express my extreme gratitude to Women of the Year for its invaluable role in recognising women’s achievements and for helping to open closed doors to enable women to more fully contribute their talents to society.”
Shelley Malton, Vodafone UK said, “Our ambition at Vodafone, is to be the very best employer for women (by 2025) and as part of this, sharing ideas and championing female innovators, not only within our own organisation but the industry as a whole – is key. It’s fantastic to see Helen Bevan (OBE) and Utterberry LTD win Vodafone’s Woman of the Year Innovation Award and we hope, together we can inspire more women to excel in the tech sector”.
