Finding Your Voice – How Women Learn to Speak and be Heard Across a Lifetime

For the last ten years, The Newnham Associates and Women of the Year have held a joint event, to celebrate women and all they achieve and contribute in 21st century Britain. Around a hundred women attend, including alumnae from Women of the Year, Newnham Associates and fellows and students from the college.

This year, the title of our event was ‘Finding Your Voice – How Women Learn to Speak and be Heard Across a Lifetime’ and we had a stellar line-up of speakers to discuss the topic:

Gina Miller (Keynote Speaker)
Gina is a businesswoman, campaigner and champion of women’s empowerment. She was the lead claimant in two landmark Supreme Court cases on parliamentary sovereignty in 2017 and 2019.

Yomi Adegoke
Yomi is a multi-award winning journalist, broadcaster and internationally bestselling author who writes about race, feminism, popular culture and how they intersect, as well as class and politics. She is currently a columnist at the Guardian and a contributing editor at Elle UK.

Rhianon Bragg
Rhianon has become an advocate in the area of stalking, domestic abuse and coercive control, speaking and writing about her experiences, lobbying and contacting and meeting with government and senior civil service officials and delivering lived experience training.

Chairing the event was Leonie Mellinger, a Communication Skills Coach, Podcaster (The Courage To Speak) and actor. Leonie has lectured students at Newnham and held training workshops with a number of Fellows. She is also a longstanding member of the Women of the Year Management and Nominating Committees.
