Women of the Year Lecture Monday 25 April 2016

Dame Stephanie Shirley will be in conversation with Sue MacGregor.

Monday 25 April 2016, 6.00pm – 9.00pm at The Royal Institution of Great Britain, 21 Albemarle Street, London, W1S 4BS.

From escaping Germany in the Kinderstransport to becoming a successful businesswoman, from being the mother of an autistic child to becoming one of Britain’s greatest philanthropists: Dame Stephanie Shirley will be talking about her incredible life with broadcaster Sue MacGregor CBE.

In October 2015 Dame Stephanie Shirley was the recipient of The Women of the Year 60th Anniversary Special Award given in memory of Tony Lothian who founded the Women of the Year lunch. Tony’s granddaughter, Louise Vaughan, accepted the award on Dame Shirley’s behalf, who was unfortunately unable to attend the event.

Recognised for the way she has revolutionised the female workforce in this country, Dame Stephanie broke many glass ceilings and paved the way for changes that women now take for granted. She is one of the most generous philanthropists in the UK having given away nearly £70 million. Dame Stephanie has described her life’s work as a ‘crusade for women to be respected for their capabilities’, a commitment that epitomises what Women of the Year stands for.

Sue MacGregor was born in Oxford and brought up in South Africa, where she gained her first broadcasting experience. She joined the BBC first as a producer, then as one of the first women reporters on Radio 4’s ‘The World at One’, and for fifteen years presented ‘Woman’s Hour’. After which she co-hosted ‘Today’, for many years, and went on to front the popular book discussion programme ‘A Good Read’. She is currently heard presenting the award-winning “The Reunion” on BBC Radio 4, bringing back together, after many years, people involved in an important and sometimes historically significant event.

The Women of the Year Lecture event will take the format of an interview followed by a Q&A session in which the audience is invited to take part. Drinks will be served afterwards.

All Women of the Year alumnae are invited to attend and to bring a guest, men are welcome.

Tickets are £35 each and are issued on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Tickets can be purchased online here.
